The price of peace with the homeowners’ association

I used to think homeowners’ associations had the potential to be great democratic institutions. I also believed that I was put on this earth to write the ideal homeowner association document. If I could deliver this perfect tool, I thought, then future generations of homeowners associations would conduct their affairs in peace and harmony.

Yeah, right.

My older, more cynical self has publicly declared that homeowner associations need to be constrained from their own evil impulses, limited by their documents to the most menial tasks and prohibited from interfering elsewhere. Homeowner associations, I have said on more than one occasion, are good for mowing the lawn and not much else.   Read more…….
