Backboard seizures put residents on defense

The community’s HOA rules prohibit backboards from being left on the street when not in use, McCormick said. But the association doesn’t have jurisdiction over public streets, leaving enforcement to the county.

On pleasant afternoons, kids from Jon Henderson’s Ladera Ranch neighborhood often gather in his cul-de-sac, shooting hoops against his portable backboard while the parents socialize.  “That is why most people move to Ladera,” Henderson said of his unincorporated South County community. “They have young children and know that they will be safe playing on the end of the cul-de-sac.” Sean Henderson and Ryan Wolter play under the Henderson’s portable basketball hoop, which was confiscated by the county because it had been left out in the street.
